Off the cruise, Key Largo and Key West

7 Mile Bridge in the Lower Keys
Be a Good Dog or We will .....

Our last evening we watch the sunset from the hot tub and pack for an early departure. Back in the RV, we cross Miami, pick a rental car with which to see the Keys and head for Dusty’s dog camp. She is bright and very happy. I hope she got to do leather work and archery at her camp. Happily reunited we head back to the Everglades to our home base.
Key Largo is a disappointment. Nothing like the movie! A strip of stores with no water in sight. No I don’t want bargain sandals at $199. Our Everglades home is welcoming.
The ride to Key West is different. Here is the Florida Keys I expected. Small islands connected with 2 lane bridges, islands dotting the light green water. A few public beaches, one, Anne’s Beach is wonderful. Half a mile of white sand. We walk out into the ocean, almost ½ a mile, the water still not to our waist. There is a wooden boardwalk that wends through the thick mangroves and delivers one to small beach after small beach.  One bridge is 7 miles long. We drive, skimming over the ocean, water close by, islands off in the distance showing green mangrove, now and then a beach. Key West is awful. Just a big tourist trap, a money-sucking machine. Everywhere rackus bars or booths to sell trips to get off the land and into boats to swim or drink. I would like to snorkel again, but we have the pup. We are happy to return to the highway across the water and stop and walk in the shallow blue green water. Again it is good to be home. The park is so peaceful, surrounded by tall tall pines, the birds calling one another.
