Santa Fe seems a city that maintained its quaintness while all others built to 20 times their original size. We spent most of the time on the square. The shops around there are wonderful, amazing furniture and jewelry, pots and art. But on the square, all along one side is an overhung walkway where Native Americans sell their crafts and art. There I found 2 things, one is phenomenal craftsmanship, silver and brass, copper and stone, paintings and beadwork. I replaced my old worn money clip with a bright new one, with a beautiful stone held by silver. Yes they were trying to sell, but I have never been to a craft selling where there was so must pride in the workmanship. Almost everyone we spoke to did the work that they sold. The other thing we found there was culture. Many times folks told us stories about the symbols that adorned their pieces. One man stood as he told a story told him by his grandfather about the bear. 15 minutes later he finished how the creator had taken his sight because the bear had initially been given great power to care for and protect all the creatures but h had failed to use this power for this good, and that was why you never see eyes on the drawings of bear in Native American art.
