Because of a number of difficult roads (that means highways reaching 6500 feet) and misreading maps we arrived at White Sands at the end of a day instead of the start. But we had time to get a good taste of this strange out of place phenomenon. Imagine tall mountains on either side of a wide, flat valley. Cactus strewn desert spreads through out the valley, but then there is a huge swatch of bright white gypsum sand dunes. They start low and slowly grow to a height of 75 feet. We drove in about 12 miles in among this white wonderland and parked at the base of some 30-foot dunes. There in front of us was a man, 6 feet tall, huge potbelly and flowing white hair, next to him was a single humped camel. His friend and pet from 1 day old they were there standing on the top of a white dune. The camel was now 12 years old and they came to answer your questions about dromedaries and hopefully add Jesus to your life. We listened to the camel part and Dusty and I ran around the sand. She loved it!
